LARS VILK: A WORD OF ART

"Lars Vilks was born in Helsingborg, Sweden. He earned a Ph.D. in art history from Lund University in 1987, and worked at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts from 1988 to 1993. From 1997 to 2003, he was a professor in art theory at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. As an art theorist, Vilks is a proponent of the institutional theory of art."

Lars is not running for his life; he is creating for his life. It's not easy being an artist for Lars, especially after he had depicted Mohammed as a roundabout dog.

For examples:
1. Regularly receives death threats. One woman was charged with uttering a death threat.
2. A generic roundabout dog created by Lars & local children, was later set on fire.
3. "We announce a reward of $100,000 to anyone who kills this infidel criminal. This reward will be raised to $150,000 if he is slaughtered like a lamb," said Abu Omar al-Baghdadi. Lars replied, "I suppose this makes my art project a bit more serious. It's also good to know how much one is worth."
4. An attempt to burn down his home was made.
5. An assassination attempt was thwarted this past March 6, 2010.
6. A suburban Pennsylvania woman known by the alias "Jihad Jane" was charged with plotting a murder attempt on Lars.
7. May 11, 2010, Lars was attacked while giving a talk about free speech at Uppsala University.

When I received word that Lars was visiting Toronto, it seemed imperative that I obtain a photo of him holding a FREE SPEECH card. Security was tight, but penetrated. Voila!

Friday the 13th last was a great night for poetry in Toronto at This Ain’t The Rosedale Library, starring David Meltzer, Terri Carrion, Michael Rothenberg, Jim Christy, and my good friend, Robert Priest.

Terri Carrión was conceived in Venezuela and born in New York to a Galician mother and Cuban father. She grew up in Los Angeles where she spent her youth skateboarding and slam-dancing. Terri Carrión earned her MFA at Florida International University in Miami, where she taught Freshman English and Creative Writing, edited and designed the graduate literary magazine Gulfstream, taught poetry to High School docents at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and started a reading series at the local Luna Star Café. In her final semester at FIU, she was Program Director for the Study Abroad Program, Creative Writing in Dublin, Ireland.

Always in search of original characters and experiences, Jim Christy is a literary vagabond with few peers. He was once described by GeorgeWoodcock as 'one of the last unpurged North American anarchisticromantics'. His buddies have included hobos, jazz musicians, boxers,and non-academic writers such as Charles Bukowski, Peter Trower and Joe Ferone. “I never dismiss another’s story out of hand,” he writes, “no matter what it’s about or how outrageous it may seem.” Christy’s often wry reminiscences of his travels, trysts and trials are fueled by a hard-won pride. A gardener, a sculptor and a spoken word performer with a jazz/blues ensemble, Christy has been seen in film and television productions, usually in non-speaking roles as a thug or a gangster.

David Meltzer, (above) was “one of the key poets of the Beat generation. Meltzer is a jazz guitarist, a Cabalist scholar and author of more than 50 books of poetry and prose. 2005 saw the publication of David's Copy: The Selected Poems of David Meltzer (edited by Michael Rothenberg, with an introduction by Jerome Rothenberg) which provides a current overview of Meltzer's work. Meltzer's Beat Thing (La Alameda Press) is his epic poem on the Beat generation. IMeltzer's other books include No Eyes, poems on Lester Young, and a book of interviews, San Francisco Beat: Talking with the Poets (City Lights Books). Meltzer teaches at the New College of California in the Poetics Program which was originally founded by Robert Duncan. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

Kate Marshall-Flaherty lives in Toronto with her husband and three children. She leads poetry sweatshop workshops, guides meditation and mindfulness retreats, and is a founding member of the Children's Peace Theatre Toronto. She celebrated the launch of her first book, entitled Tilted Equilibrium, this May 2006, and launched her first CD, Deepening Stillness, in June.

She has read from this and her new manuscript at Toronto's Art Bar, Toronto WordStage, and at the LCP's AGM in Ottawa this year. She has won several awards for her poetry, is published in a number of magazines and anthologies, and made the shortlist for the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, Nimrod Journal 2006, and others.

Kate won the Toronto Art Bar's Poetry Slam 2005, and the Toronto Art Bar's Poetry Sweatshop Contest in 2004. She has been filmed and interviewed for Bravo's Heart of the Poet series twice in 2005 and 2006. She has participated in The Banff Centre's Writing With Style Program twice, and leads a Poetry Writing Workshop at University of Toronto's Continuing Ed. SMC Campus. Poetry is her first love, and continues to be her life-line.

Nik Beat has been a practising poet for the last 17 years based in Toronto Canada. Beat has been published in numerous anthologies throughout the world and has been translated into Hungarian, French, Hebrew and Italian. Nik Beat's work has been published in book form as a collection of poetry in two books: 'Cartoon Rome' and 'The Tyranny of Love'.

Beat is one of the founders of the Neo-Beat literary scene in Toronto Canada. Also, for the last 10 years he has been hosting a spoken word show called 'Howl' on CIUT 89.5 FM radio.
